The block was closed in May 2004, after extensive consultation with all parties, as the most efficient way to allow for the extensive repairs and necessary upgrades. Final plans include a new concrete road surface, crosswalks, brick sidewalks, curbs, catch basins, manholes, streetlights, traffic signals, and trees.
The entire project, from Pennsylvania to H Street on 10th Street, is scheduled for completion early this fall.
- Closing: Wisconsin Avenue, below M
In a few weeks, DDOT will limit Wisconsin Avenue traffic just below M Street for about a year for major work on the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge over the C&O Canal.
The following traffic limits were worked out with Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2E, businesses, residents and the National Park Service: northbound traffic, one lane open; southbound traffic, encouraged to use the 29th, 30th and 31st Streets Bridge; the garage in the Shops at Georgetown Park, open throughout the project.
Built in 1831 and registered as a national monument in 1961, the bridge is made primarily of sandstone; it has suffered from weather-induced erosion and very heavy use over the years.
While DDOT has just finished rebuilding the 31st Bridge over the C & O Canal, over the next few years, further reconstruction work will be necessary on the other foot and vehicle bridges over the Canal.
