Mayor Williams, USDOT Secretary Mineta Sign Agreement on South Capitol Street Bridge
Mayor Williams also pointed to the public and private actions currently underway that are beginning to realize AWI and a new South Capitol Street.
DDOT recently convened the South Capitol Street Bridge Design Workshop to harness the creativity and energy of architecture students at Howard University and the University of Maryland with top bridge designers to produce possible design concepts. These were on display at the signing.
In addition, at the doorstep of the Pump House, one of the segments of the Anacostia Riverwalk has been created. This 20-mile network of multiuse trails for walkers and bicyclists on both banks of the Anacostia River will knit communities on both the shores of the Anacostia in the District and Maryland. Construction of this segment, funded in part by USDOT, was led by the Earth Conservation Corps and includes significant environmental education and skills training for our District youth. This endeavor embodies the connection that transportation funds can make to improve the quality of life for urban neighborhoods.
Significant investment plans for private development for the Anacostia waterfront have been announced.
