Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) is a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach that involves all stakeholders to develop a transportation facility that fits its physical setting and preserves scenic, aesthetic, historic, and environmental resources, while maintaining safety and mobility. CSS is an approach that considers the total context within which a transportation improvement project will exist.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) uses the CSS approach in all of its transportation projects. DDOT's context sensitive approach expands from extended public involvement to preserving the historic character of the District, from avoiding adverse impacts on the natural parklands to enhancing multi-modal transportation options in every transportation project. 

DDOT has a long history of extended community involvement. DDOT's public involvement process starts at the project-scoping stage and continues through completion of construction. For public involvement many resources such as print media, electronic media, community events, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANC), and schools are used. DDOT has successfully completed the CSS training for its key personnel by offering in house as well as training through Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
