Providing Sustainable Environmental Transportation

Environment

The District Department of Transportation is committed to providing environmentally sustainable transportation solutions.

 DDOT continues to practice and promote environmental excellence as it fulfills its mission to enhance the quality of life for the District of Columbia residents and visitors by ensuring that people, goods, and information move efficiently and safely, with minimal adverse impacts on residents and the environment.

The department has a long history of contributing to a beautiful, clean, and livable city by:

  • Undertaking the best project options to minimize negative impacts on the environment;
  • Embracing environmentally just and sustainable practices in daily decision making processes;
  • Taking into account all appropriate economic, environmental, and social concerns in the operations of the agency.

 DDOT continues to work to make the District of Columbia more attractive for businesses, residents, and visitors by developing environmentally sustainable transportation solutions for the District of Columbia while protecting the environment, reducing and preventing pollution, and conducting operations in an environmentally sustainable manner.

About Us

The DDOT Environmental Program is part of the Policy, Planning and Sustainability Administration (PPSA). It is managed by the "Project Development and Environment (PDE)" Branch of PPSA. The PDE Branch provides oversight of all environmental work at DDOT including compliance with federal and local laws and regulations.

The DDOT environmental program also includes an Environmental Management System (EMS). The PDE branch provides technical oversight and assistance to DDOT staff in the project delivery from project planning to construction and maintenance/operations. It also provides guidance and assistance to DDOT staff in making DDOT projects and operations (including office operations) environmentally sustainable. This branch develops and maintains DDOT Environmental policy and provides environmental training and guidance.
