14th Street Bridge Rehabilitation

The $27 million rehabilitation of the 14th Street Bridges, that connect the District with Northern Virginia, began in spring 2009. The project involves major repairs to the northbound bridge and minor repairs to the southbound bridge (no work is occurring on the HOV bridge).

The work with the greatest impact on the public is repairs to the deck of the northbound bridge. There are single and double lane closures in off-peak hours, which can create significant back-ups, but four lanes will always be maintained during rush hours. During the 8 phases of the project, there will be multiple traffic routing changes.

Aside from the construction work on the bridge, one of the unique features of the project is the refurbishment of the Operator's Tower.
